人生には一夜だけ、思い出に永遠に残るような夜があるにちがいない。誰にでもそういう一夜があるはずだ。そして、もしそういう夜が近づいていると感じ、今夜がその特別な夜になりそうだと気づいたなら、すかさず飛びつき、疑いをはさまず、以後決して他言してはならない。というのは、もし見逃せば、ふたたびそういう夜が来るとはかぎらないからだ。逃した人びとは多い。たくさんの人びとが逃し、二度とめぐりあっていない。なぜならそれは天気、光、月、時刻というすべての条件、夜の丘と暖かい草と列車と町と距離が、ふるえる指の上で絶妙のバランスをとった瞬間にあらわれる夜だからだ。
